Batch data communication in sap abap : Introduction to batch data communication in sap ABAP / Introduction to BDC in SAP ABAP

BDC is one of the Data transfer Method.

Data transfer methods are divided into 2 methods

  1. INBOUND
  2. OUTBOUND

INBOUND: Data transfer from Legacy system (External System) to SAP.

Target System is always SAP in INBOUND data transfer.

OUTBOUND: Data transfer from the SAP system to TARGET SYSTEM ( SAP / NON SAP )

Source System is always SAP in OUTBOUND data transfer.

BDC Is an INBOUND data transfer method.

SAP system offers 3 methods for transferring DATA into SAP Systems.

  1. CALL TRANSACTION
  2. SESSION
  3. DIRECT INPUT

CALL TRANSACTION and SESSION are BATCH INPUT METHODS where as DIRECT INPUT method is a standard program to post the data into SAP.

Advantages of BATCH INPUT METHOD:

  1. Large Volumes of data can be processed in batch.
  2. Data can be processed offline by using the technique of BACKground Job scheduling.
  3. Manual interaction is not required while data migration.

To implement any of the supported data transfers, we must always write the program that exports the data from NON SAP / SAP System and this program is known as ‘DATA TRANSFER’ PROGRAM. This must map the data from the External system into the data structure required by the SAP batch input program.
